Gary Vernon Butland

1946-2026

Gary Vernon Butland

Gary Vernon Butland, 80, of Moncton and formerly of Germantown passed away on June 17, 2026, at the Moncton Hospital. Born in Germantown on June 2, 1946, he was the son of the late Parker and Violet (Brewster) Butland.

A true Albert County guy, Gary grew up surrounded by the woods and developed a lifelong love of hunting, trapping, and the outdoors. He spent many years working in the forest and dedicated more than 25 years of service to Fundy National Park. Often described as a true mountain man, Gary felt most at home in nature. He had a great sense of humour and an easygoing way about him, never taking himself too seriously and always finding a way to bring a smile to those around him.

Gary had a special affection for animals, particularly horses, and held a deep bond with his beloved dog, Chum. He also shared many quiet moments with Alfretta's little Chihuahua, Trigger, who could often be found curled up beside him in his chair, providing companionship and comfort.

In his later years, Gary faced the difficult challenge of losing his eyesight and becoming legally blind. He met this hardship with remarkable courage, resilience, and gratitude, drawing strength from the kindness and support of those who loved him. He was especially thankful for his sister, Alfretta, who opened her home to him and cared for him with unwavering compassion, devotion, and love. Her generosity and support brought him comfort, dignity, and a sense of home throughout his final years.

Gary will be deeply missed by his sister, Alfretta Hawkes of Moncton; his sister-in-law, Wendy Butland of Hillsborough; and by his nieces and nephews; Kim, Darren, Jennifer, Chris, Angela, Jason, Erin, Lucas; great-nieces and nephews, Matthew, Ryan, Grace, Isabella, Alyssa, Joshua, Amber, Eugene, Isaac and Luca and great-great nieces and nephews, Jackson, James, Rylan and Jade, and by all his extended family, co-workers and friends.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister, Elsie; brothers, James (Marina) and Scott.

A funeral service to celebrate Gary’s life will be held on Sunday, June 21st, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at the Albert County Funeral Home, with Rev. Barb Haire officiating.
