Sterling Douglas Hoar

1935-2022

Sterling Douglas Hoar
Sterling Douglas Hoar

Sterling Hoar, 86, of Hopewell Hill passed away peacefully on February 26th, 2022 at the Forest Dale Home, where he has resided in the past few years, with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Hebron on July 25, 1935 the son of the late William and Arletta (Walton) Hoar.

Sterling was a hard worker and loved his farm in Hopewell Hill.  His farm was his own little piece of paradise on earth.   The view from his house was beautiful and he could look out at his barn and see all his cattle roaming the pasture and the scenery was second to none as the sunset over the Water.  He drove a school bus for 31 years and was one of the favourite drivers around, having made many connections with generations of young people.  He genuinely cared for people and knew everyone in the area.  He was known for his generosity and if anyone needed something they knew they could depend on Sterling to be there whatever the case may be.  He had a heart of gold.

He was a wonderful devoted husband, father and great grandfather.  His family was his world, his girls were his everything.  When the grandchildren started coming he was in his glory and then the great grandchildren, he was so happy to meet each and every one of them, they all had a very special place in his heart.   When he would hold the babies, you could see pure joy come over him as he held them in his arms.    When the time came for him to leave the farm and move to Forest Dale Home it was hard on the family.  However the transition was made easier by the fact Sterling knew a lot of the staff and residents and could talk about the good old days.   He made it easier for other residents who were moving in with his warm welcome to all.  He loved to talk and took an interest in anyone who wanted to have a conversation, they could speak for hours and he was content to share all his knowledge of farming and things going on around the community.

Hopewell Hill has lost an icon but his legacy of love will continue. Sterling will be remembered for his kindness and for his great smile.  "Your memory is our keepsake, with which we'll never part, God holds you in his keeping.  We have you in our hearts."

He will be deeply missed by his wife and best friend, Velma Hoar of Hopewell Hill; his daughters, Elizabeth Dow (Jeffrey) of Lower Coverdale, Heather Belliveau of Tillsonburg, ON and Myra Akerley (Anthony) of Riverview; his treasured grandchildren,  Natalie Doyle (Mike), Adrian Dow (Nathalie), Bethany Robblee (Brandon), Bradley Dow ( Rebecca), Amy Goodine (Joe), Kayla Buchanan, Ryan Buchanan (Alicia), Justin Akerley (Allana) and Brittany Akerley; his precious great grandchildren, Mia, Mindy, Emmett, Lillianne, Chloe, Breanne, Seth, Sadie, Amelia, Katherine, Anna, Arym, Arletta, and Arabella; his brother George Hoar of Riverside-Albert; sisters-in-law, Mabel Hoar of Riverview and Mary Hoar of Hillsborough; by Velma's family, Winston Barbour (Roseanne) Barrie, ON and Vira Vujovich (Paul) of Australia.  He will also be missed by all his extended family, many nieces, nephews, friends and by his community.
