Donald Vernon Hopper

1930-2020

Donald Vernon Hopper
Donald Vernon Hopper, 89, of Fundy Royal Manor, Hillsborough, NB passed away peacefully on September 19, 2020 at the Moncton Hospital.

Don was born in Hillsborough on November 6, 1930 the son of the late Arthur and Gertrude (Wright) Hopper. He was a quiet man, but always enjoyed being around family and friends, perhaps partly because he grew up in a family of 13 children. He loved his family, his church, and his community, which he demonstrated as much through his actions as his words.

Don worked as a mechanic at Acadia Toyota in Moncton for over 25 years. Prior to that he worked with his brothers drilling wells, often travelling around the Atlantic Provinces. He was an active member of the Hillsborough United Church from the time he moved to Hillsborough with his new family in 1960, and will be fondly remembered for his constant presence in the kitchen during church suppers and especially for making the tea every Sunday morning after church for the weekly coffee and conversation gatherings.

Don was very active in his community and you could always count on him to be there when he was needed. He was past President and active member of the Hillsborough Kiwanis, past President of the Recreation Council in Hillsborough, a member of the Hillsborough Rink Committee, a member of the Voodoo Jet Committee, and a participant in numerous other community events during his many years in Hillsborough. He enjoyed the outdoors – skating, golfing, gardening, spending time with his dog, and especially cutting wood. Don also loved music – listening, playing and dancing. He played harmonica and guitar and he loved attending the Thursday evening Rocky Cape Jamboree open mike shows at the Hillsborough Kiwanis Centre.

He will be deeply missed by his devoted children, Eric Hopper (Peggy) of Fredericton and daughter Corinne Masson of Moncton; his treasured grandchildren, Rachel (of Ottawa), Nicholas and Brennan; and his twin brother, Arnold Hopper of Fundy Royal Manor, Hillsborough. He will also be missed by his many nieces, nephews, all his extended family and his many friends.

Besides his parents he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Roxanne (McLatchy) Hopper; his siblings, Inez, Ronald, Omer, Mildred, Ruby, Frank, Margaret, Russell, Nettie, Lewis, and Alice.

Don resided at Fundy Royal Manor with his twin brother, Arnie where they could usually be found sitting side by side in the living room, sometimes holding hands. Don will be remembered for his great sense of humour, his genuine laugh and his quiet but charming personality. " He has gone to be with his Lord, but his memory will live on in our hearts forever."

Honouring Don's own wishes there will be no visitation. Due to Covid-19 a private celebration of his life will be held at the Hillsborough United Church by invitation only with Rev. Peggy Reid officiating. The service will be live-streamed on the Hillsborough United Church facebook page on Friday, September 25th, 2020 at 2:00pm for those wishing to view the service. Interment will be in the Grey's Island Cemetery, Hillsborough, NB.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Hillsborough United Church, Hillsborough Kiwanis, or charity of the donor's choice would be greatly appreciated.
